Sacred Heart Primary, New Town

The central heart to the school, originally a treeless grassed space, has been transformed into a vibrant nature based playspace and two tiered sand play area. Utilising the existing slope a river pebble lined and rilled creek bed flows down the entire site with a secret water diversion course and through a beautifully carved timber trunk aiding in the building of dams and experimentation with water. A dirt patch, mud pie kitchen and warm timber elements of jetties and a conversation circle of carved tree stumps all add to the calming aesthetic and provide flexible spaces within which to imagine and enjoy. A forest of trees has been planted across the site with paths tunneling through garden beds to encourage exploratory play and delight.

The success of the project became clear in the first few months of opening with it nearly being loved to death!
